Microchipping

If a dog is ever lost or stolen, the chances of them being reunited their owner are maximised if they are microchipped and registered to the correct person. At Brackenbound Canine, I am fully insured and trained to implant a microchip and register the dog to the PETtrac™ database by setting up the owner/breeder with their own PETtrac™ account (if they don't already have one), and transferring the details for FREE.

It is a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped by 8 weeks of age, with their identity and owner contact details registered on an approved database (The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015). Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to £500.

At the appointment

The process of microchipping is quick and each puppy will be handled gently and only for a few minutes before being returned to their bed. I will use a pop up table, all equipment will be sanitised between uses, and I will be wearing gloves.

Firstly I will give the puppy a physical assessment to ensure they are in a fit state to be implanted and use a microchip scanner to check the puppy is not already chipped. These checks are for the welfare of the puppy and are performed at every single appointment. If I suspect the puppy is unwell, I reserve the right to refuse to implant and will refer you to a vet.

The microchip I use will be a sterile 'Mini Friendchip' (ISO Standard). It is the size of a grain of rice and will be implanted under the loose skin between the shoulder blades causing no more discomfort than a vaccination. Following implantation, the area will be re-scanned to double check the chip is in place.

After implantation

When the puppies have been implanted, I will immediately transfer the microchip details from my PETtrac™ account over to the breeder's account. This is completely free, quick and easy to do on my phone or laptop.

Setting up a PETtrac™ account is free, as is the transfer of details from myself to the breeder and once again from the breeder to the new owner. Once with the owner, it is free to update telephone numbers, email address or surname. It costs £6 to change a full address when they move house and £12 for a change of keepership. As the breeder it is integral that details are transferred to the new owner, and the owner educated on the requirement to follow Legislation for the sake of the animal.
